Former off spinner of Indian team Ravichandran Ashwin Has given a big statement amidst the ongoing speculations regarding the future of Rohit Sharma. Ashwin believes that if the 2027 ODI World Cup is in the plans of the Indian team management and selectors Rohit Sharma If he was not involved, he should have told this clearly much earlier. He said that making any veteran player feel unwanted in his own team is the worst way to do so.

The decision should have been announced only after the Champions Trophy

During a conversation on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, ‘If the selectors had decided that Rohit Sharma would not be a part of the 2027 World Cup plans, then this decision should have been announced immediately after winning the 2025 Champions Trophy.’ According to him, this would have provided clarity to the player about his future and also avoided the ongoing speculations.

‘Don’t make Rohit feel unwanted’

Ashwin said, ‘There cannot be a worse feeling for any player than that the team for which he played for years and made his mark, makes him feel that he is no longer needed’. He clearly said that players should be treated respectfully and it is necessary to have clear communication in time regarding their future.

Also mentioned his retirement

While talking on this issue, Ashwin also gave the example of his retirement. He said, ‘I was the ‘Player of the Series’ in the series against Bangladesh. We did not perform well against New Zealand and I take full responsibility for that. But when we reached Australia, I realized that the team management did not want me there.

Questions raised regarding senior players

The former Indian spinner said that there is a need to seriously consider the way the last phase of the career of senior players in the Indian team is being handled. According to him, the contribution of the players should be respected and any major decision should be taken with transparency, so that no veteran has to face an uncomfortable situation at the end of his own career.
