
Many legendary cricketers including Sachin Tendulkar and Virat Kohli have paid tribute to former West Indies all-rounder Sir Gary Sobers. A day earlier on Friday, West Indies had informed about the death of Sir Gary Sobers. Sobers died on 17 July at the age of 89.
Sobers was one of the greatest all-rounders in cricket. He played 93 Test matches for the West Indies from 1954 to 1974, scoring 8,032 runs at an average of 57.78 and taking 235 wickets. Sobers first created the world record of hitting 6 sixes in all 6 balls of an over. He accomplished this feat in a first class match.

1. Kapil Dev- Inspired many players like me
Former captain Kapil Dev, who won India’s first World Cup in 1983, described Sir Gary Sobers as the best player in the history of cricket. Kapil said- ‘Every person who understands cricket is a fan of Sobers. He was one of the most brilliant cricketers born in the history of the game.
Kapil said- ‘The way he played cricket inspired many players like me and showed the way to move forward. His records inspire the youth even today. Sobers’ departure is such a void in the sports world that will never be filled.
2. Gavaskar- One of the saddest days for cricket
Former captain Sunil Gavaskar said this is one of the saddest days for cricket. Sobers was the player every child dreams of becoming when they hold a bat or ball for the first time. Sobers’ memories will always be alive in his heart.
3. Sachin Tendulkar- Will always remember One and Only
Recalling the memorable moments spent with Sobers, former Indian batsman Sachin Tendulkar said that cricket has lost its ‘one and only’ megastar. Sachin wrote on X that it is very difficult to accept the news of the demise of Sir Garfield Sobers. Many moments spent with him over the years are being remembered again and again today.

4. Virat Kohli- Legacy will inspire future generations
Kohli wrote on social platform X- ‘Cricket has lost one of its greatest players.’ Virat wrote- ‘Sir Garfield Sobers, tribute to you. His legacy will continue to inspire future generations.

5. Farooq Engineer said- It is difficult for a player like Sobers to be born again
Former Indian wicketkeeper-batsman Farooq Engineer said – It is very difficult for a player like Sobers to be born again and the entire cricket world is in mourning due to his demise. In an interview to PTI from London, Farooq Engineer said that Sir Garfield Sobers was not only a great cricketer but also a wonderful human being.
He said, ‘He was the most complete cricketer ever. The entire cricket world will always remember this great player. I spoke to Wes Hall and Mrs. Sobers a while ago. There is an atmosphere of mourning throughout Barbados.
Silence will be observed before today’s matches in Sri Lanka Premier League
The Sri Lanka Cricket Board has issued a statement on the demise of Sir Gary Sobers saying that in his honor a minute’s silence will be observed before the start of all the matches of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) 2026 to be played at the SSC Ground in Colombo today. Apart from this, players of all the teams participating in today’s matches will enter the field wearing black bands as a tribute.
